Mural Disorder

This is part of a fast fading, once beautiful (and very large) mural span entitled "The Spirit of Hyde Park" that is under the viaduct on 57th street. It was designed by Astrid Fuller and put up by the Chicago Mural Group in 1973. Now have a look at other murals from all over the world and enjoy!

  6. Great pic BC. I know the lighting under the viaducts can be tricky. I acutally know this one and walked past it in the past.

  7. They vandalized the graffiti! =)

That boy with the white face reminds me of how hubby as akid would erase the face of a person he doesnt like by yeah: pentel pens or liquid erasers...

  11. Nice find. Curious that the defacing is very subtle. I would have drawn a mustache and some horns on the characters. :)

  13. That's a good mural, but shame that you're starting to lose it bit by bit.

  17. Wonderful. I thing the aged look lends it more interest.

  18. And it's been defaced. It's a shame the city won't invest in a restoration. Wonderful photo and commentary. Here is my CDP: Street Art entry (too late for the list). Thank you.

  21. thanks susan, andree, jana and r&r--yes i thought it was amazing too that its been up since 1973--its been defaced many times and the city cleans up "tags" (graffiti) so a lot of the mural has been whited out...

  22. This was a wonderful mural, and I believe it is now going to be restored. The artist, Astrid Fuller, is my aunt. I remember her working on this. There was a lot of community involvement, too, including work on the flat color areas by local children. I loved the painting of the Chicago Children's Choir, with my cousin in the group. My family appears in Astrid's murals in some places. Astrid is still living in Hyde Park and continues to be interested in civil rights, social justice, and art.
