Isn't the sign grammatically correct? Grits is not plural; it would be the same if oatmeal was brought back on the menu. It would say Oatmeal is back.
One of the most clever uses of incorrect, correct grammar was the Alfred Hitchcock movie, The Birds. The billboards signaling the movie opening were entitled: "The Birds Is Coming!" which for a movie billboard was correct.
Hi! I'm a bit of a grammar freak. A movie with an apparently plural title like The Birds can be listed as "The Birds" is here, since 'the movie' is understood. However, grits are just that--plural, so I personally think it should be 'are back.' When referring to grits, you'd sy 'they,' not 'it,' so....
