Good for the Soul

They say a smile can warm up even the coldest day. Here's a bedazzling smile from Sam--tour bus driver for the Chicago Architecture Foundation. (Thank you, Sam!)

Grant Park

More snow fell yesterday and today. It's no blizzard of '67 (thanks be to the good enough lord). But. I'm a little sick. Well, more than a little. Still. The sun was out this afternoon. So I guess we're still good...

Heald Square Monument

Wacker Drive. Robert Morris, George Washington and Haym Solomon. Created by Lorado Taft and finished by his associate Leonard Crunelle. Learn more about the Heald Square Monument from Chicago Landmarks. The buildings behind them are the identical Marina City towers whose wiki page has an interesting discussion of their building particulars (for ex. it runs entirely on electricity) and lists the buildings' famous movie moments.

Where He Is

I see this man off and on through the seasons--whatever the season, he's always sitting on this particular spot.

Tiffany Dome

Last January, I posted a partial view of the ceiling of Preston Bradley Hall in the Chicago Cultural Center. Here is the the 38-foot Tiffany glass dome designed by artist J. A. Holtzer. This is the largest Tiffany glass dome in the world.

Date Night

Here's a statistic I found on amusingfacts. com: 53% of American women say they would dump their boyfriends if their boyfriends failed to get them anything on Valentine's Day. And the remaining 47%? I am guessing they just go and get themselves their own chocolates and roses...

Have a nice Valentine, everyone! Give a hug, get a hug...

Located in the heart of the campus of the University of Chicago, tours of the house and the gift shop are run by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust.

Everyday People

Stan on Randolph Street, long-time veteran of tough Chicago winters...

In honor of the infinitely quotable Abraham Lincoln whose birthday it is today, here's a good one: "Common-looking people are the best in the world: that is the reason the Lord makes so many of them..." (Happy Birthday, Honest Abe! Thank you, Stan!)

Chilly Day For the Bowman

Congress Parkway and Michigan. The Bowman and the Spearman are the two gatekeeper sculptures created in 1928 by Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestorvic and installed in the central entrance to Grant Park. You'll find photos of the Spearman (along with the Bowman) here in the blog Public Art in Chicago--a blog I look forward to exploring more as I have only just found it myself...

Away From My Desk

I am away from Chicago until Saturday. I thought I'd have regular internet access and be able to blog throughout the time I will be away but alas--no such luck and here I am, four days late in posting this little announcement. Thank you for visiting and leaving all your nice comments from Theme Day--I haven't had a chance to respond to them yet. I hope to see everyone when I return and catch up with everything that's happened while I was away. Thanks again, take care and I'll see you all soon!

Iconic Chicago

Theme day today and the theme is to post a photo of what people imagine when thinking of (your city here). For today, I've chosen a shot from under the elevated train tracks here in the loop. It's not a shot I took today or even yesterday--this was a sunny day two months ago(!) Right now, we're experiencing the biggest snow storm of the season and more than a foot of snow has blanketed the city.

Please go and enjoy the other daily photo cities participating today by clicking on the links below.
