Safety on Campus

There are over three hundred of these emergency telephones on the campus of the University of Chicago and its surrounding areas. Pressing the red button will automatically transmit its location to the University Police, and they will come to your aid whether you speak to a dispatcher or not. An interesting aside: the U of C private police force is one of the largest in the world, the only one larger is the Vatican's. Click here to read more on safety in the city.

  1. My wife and I have sure seen these on our many visits to U of C during the time it was draining the family financial resources. However, I had no idea how big the police force was! There are other large university campuses in worse neighborhoods - University of Southern California comes to mind.

Could the Vatican's police force be considered private? After all, it is technically a nation-state.

  3. Thanks for the comments Bob and Moi, the neighborhood is like most other city neighborhoods in my opinion and is not scary...but it is no stranger to petty or violent crime. I think the size of the police force is why it is a safer neighborhood than others...

Bob, perhaps it is considered private since the Vatican has no navy or air force like other true nation/states...and no taxpayers either for that matter...

  4. How did I miss this post? Anyway... Sixty cruisers, huh? That's got to be a pretty safe campus/neighborhood.

Those emergency phones are nicely designed.
